compressed on your device — your video is never uploaded
Discord's free upload limit has been 20 MB since August 2026 (it was 10 MB for the two years before), and the number has changed more than once. Whatever it is this month, a screen recording of a bug or a 30-second phone clip of a goal blows through it. This page uses the small compression preset, which is tuned for exactly that case: it re-encodes the clip as an MP4 that Discord embeds and plays inline, at a size that gets short clips under the free cap.
The compression runs in your browser with FFmpeg. On first use the browser downloads that engine, roughly 30 MB, and keeps it for next time. Your clip is not uploaded to anyone's server before being compressed, which also means no queue.
Two honest limits. The preset picks a quality level, not a file size, so a long clip can still come out over 10 MB; when you need the file to land under an exact number, the Compress Video to Size tool on this site calculates the bitrate from the clip's length instead. And because your own machine does the work, a two-minute 1080p clip takes a minute or two on a laptop and noticeably longer on a phone. Shorter clips, or a trimmed highlight, compress faster and look better at this size.

Frequently asked questions
- What's the Discord upload limit?
- 20 MB on a free account since August 2026 (it was 10 MB from 2024); Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. The limit has changed several times, so trust the number in Discord's own error banner. This preset sets a quality level, so for long clips use the exact-size tool.
- Will the quality drop a lot?
- Some quality is traded for size, but the preset is tuned so short clips stay clear. Shorter or lower-resolution videos compress with less visible loss.
- Will the compressed clip play inline in Discord?
- Yes. The output is a standard MP4, which Discord embeds with its own player in channels and DMs as long as the file is under the upload limit for your account.
- Does Nitro change which preset I should pick?
- With Nitro the cap is far higher, so use the medium or balanced preset instead and keep more quality. The small preset exists for the free limit, where size matters more than sharpness.

- How to compress a video for Discord (under 20 MB) without a watermark Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB since August 2026. Here is what that limit actually allows, how to get a clip under it without turning it into mush, and why you do not need an app or a server to do it.
- How to make a video file smaller without ruining it Four things decide how big a video is: length, resolution, bitrate and codec. Which one to change for email, WhatsApp, a website or a USB stick, the arithmetic behind "fit under 25 MB", and why trimming first is free.
