iPhone HEIC/HEIF photos · decoded on your device — never uploaded
iPhones save photos as HEIC, a format that keeps files small on the phone and then refuses to open on half the computers, websites and printers you send it to. Windows shows a blank icon, a form says "unsupported file type", a print kiosk does not list it. Converting to JPG makes the photo open everywhere.
Browsers cannot read HEIC on their own, so this page loads a small decoder the first time you use it. That first conversion takes a moment; after that the decoder is cached and conversions are quick. The output is a standard JPG at high quality.
Photos from a phone are personal by nature, which is a good reason not to send them to a converter's server. Here the decoding happens on your device and the file never leaves it. The honest limit: decoding HEIC is heavy work, so a large photo takes a few seconds and a phone is slower at it than a computer.

Frequently asked questions
- Why won't my HEIC photos open on Windows?
- HEIC is Apple's format. Converting to JPG makes them open everywhere.
- Is my photo uploaded to convert it?
- No — the HEIC decoder runs inside your browser. The first conversion loads the decoder, then it's instant.
- Can I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC?
- Yes. In Settings, Camera, Formats, choose "Most Compatible" and new photos are saved as JPG. Existing HEIC photos still need converting.
- Is quality lost when converting to JPG?
- A little, as with any JPG. The output is saved at high quality, and for viewing, sharing and printing the difference is not visible.
