Since iOS 11, an iPhone's default photo format has been HEIC, which stores a photo at about half the size of a JPG with no visible loss. That is a good deal on the phone and a problem everywhere else: Windows may prompt you to install a codec, an online application form rejects the file, a print service does not list it. A JPG copy of the same photo opens in every one of those places.

Browsers cannot decode HEIC themselves, so the first time you use this page it fetches a small decoder; that first run takes a moment, and after that it is cached and conversions are quick. The decoding and the JPG export then happen on your device. The photo is never uploaded, which is the right arrangement for pictures of children or documents photographed for a form. The output is a regular high-quality JPG that any program, site or printer accepts.

The trade-off is that the work is done by your own hardware. A 12-megapixel HEIC takes a few seconds, a 48-megapixel file from a recent Pro model takes longer, and a phone is slower at it than a laptop. A Live Photo converts as its still frame only, and HEIC keeps a little more colour depth than JPG can store, which matters for heavy editing but not for sharing or uploading.
