There are still plenty of places where a video will not play but a GIF will: a GitHub README, a Slack or Teams message, a Jira ticket or Notion page documenting a bug, a forum post. A few seconds of MP4 as a GIF loops there with no play button.

This page does the conversion in your browser using the FFmpeg engine, downloaded on first use, with no watermark and no upload of the clip. Two settings decide the result. Frame rate sets how smooth the motion is, and 10 to 15 frames per second is plenty for a screen recording or a reaction clip. Width sets sharpness and weight, with 480 to 600 pixels sensible for chat and docs. A palette is built from your own frames instead of a one-size-fits-all set, which is why gradients and skin tones hold up better than usual.

GIF is a 1987 format, and that shows in two ways. It holds 256 colours per frame, so a sunset or a dark scene may show banding, and it has no real compression, so a long or wide clip balloons: ten seconds at full width can outweigh the MP4 it came from. Keep clips short, trim them with the Video Trimmer first if needed, and if the GIF is still too heavy, the GIF Compressor on this site reduces it.

Frequently asked questions

MP4 or GIF — when should I use each?
GIF autoplays and loops silently everywhere but files get big. If your platform supports it, MP4 stays smaller; GIF wins for universal inline playback.
Is there a watermark?
No — the GIF downloads clean, made entirely on your device.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIF has no audio track at all, so the sound is dropped during conversion. If the clip only makes sense with sound, send the MP4 instead or add a caption with the Add Text tool.
Can I convert just part of the video?
The cleanest way is to cut the section you want with the Video Trimmer on this site first, which is quick and lossless, then convert the short clip here. Shorter input also means a far smaller GIF.
