Profile photos on WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Slack and nearly every app are shown as a square or a circle cut from a square, and Instagram's classic post is 1080 by 1080. Hand a platform a rectangular photo and it decides the crop for you, sometimes badly. Cropping to 1:1 before you upload means you see exactly what the platform will show. The crop is taken from the centre: the tool keeps the largest square that fits inside your picture, which is a square whose side equals the shorter edge, so a 4000 by 3000 photo becomes a 3000 by 3000 one. Nothing is scaled or stretched, and the pixels that remain are exactly as they were, so there is no quality loss. That central default suits portraits, product shots and anything framed with the subject in the middle, which is most phone photos. It also means there is no frame to drag: the honest limit is that a subject sitting near the left or right edge may be partly cut off. A quick loose crop in your phone's gallery first, pulling the subject toward the middle, solves it.
