Opening a photo in a viewer shows you the picture; opening it here shows you the record the camera wrote alongside it. For a typical phone photo that record includes the make and model of the device, the lens and exposure settings, the exact date and time of capture, the software that last saved it and, if location services were on, latitude and longitude precise enough to identify a house. People use this page for two opposite reasons: to check what a photo of their own would give away before it goes on a marketplace listing or a forum, and to learn something about a photo they received, such as when it was really taken or whether it has been through an editor.
Reading the file is a plain inspection; the photo is not modified until you choose to download a cleaned copy. Fields can be wrong or missing: a camera with the wrong clock writes the wrong time, and many apps remove metadata on the way out, so a picture that arrived through WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook usually shows almost nothing. An empty record therefore does not prove the image was never tagged, only that nothing survives in this copy. The inspection runs in your browser, so a photo full of location data is never sent anywhere in order to be read.

- What can EXIF data show?
- Typically the device model, timestamp, camera settings, and — most sensitively — the GPS location where the shot was taken.
- Can I remove what I find?
- Yes — once you've seen it, download a cleaned copy to strip every field out of the image.
- Why does a photo from WhatsApp show no EXIF data?
- WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and most messaging apps strip metadata when a photo is sent or posted, so the copy you received has already lost it. Photos sent as files or documents, and email attachments, often keep their data.
- Can EXIF tell me if a photo was edited?
- Sometimes. The software field may name an editor such as Photoshop or Lightroom, and the modified date may differ from the capture date. Edited photos can also have the record removed entirely, so absence proves nothing.
