Apple devices record in M4A: every Voice Memo on an iPhone, every GarageBand export, every file from the Mac's own recorder. Inside Apple's world that is fine. The moment the file has to go somewhere else, it stops being fine: a podcast host that wants MP3, a transcription service that lists MP3 and WAV only, an Android user whose player will not open it, a car stereo reading a USB stick, a web form with an MP3 filter. Converting to MP3 ends the conversation.

This page runs FFmpeg, the same engine the big conversion sites use on their servers, inside your browser instead, and the file never leaves your device, which is how a recorded meeting or an unreleased demo should be treated. Drop the M4A, get an MP3 encoded at roughly 190 kbps variable bitrate, which you will not distinguish from the source for speech and will struggle to for music. The first conversion takes a little longer while the engine loads; after that it is quick.

M4A and MP3 are both lossy, so this is a second encoding pass; the loss is inaudible for speech and marginal for music, but keep the M4A if you may need to convert again later. And files are converted one at a time, with no daily cap, so a folder of memos means a few repetitions rather than a batch.

Frequently asked questions

Will the MP3 sound worse than the M4A?
Both are lossy formats, but the ~190kbps VBR encoding used here is transparent for voice recordings and very close for music. For a one-time conversion you will not hear the difference.
Can I convert many voice memos?
One file at a time, but with no daily cap — convert as many as you need, back to back.
Why is my iPhone recording M4A in the first place?
Apple uses AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container (.m4a) because it compresses better than MP3 at the same quality. It is a fine format — just less universally supported.
Can I pull the audio out of a video as MP3?
Yes. The converter accepts video files too, takes the audio track and encodes it to MP3, so a recorded lecture or a voice note saved as a video becomes a plain audio file.
How large will the MP3 be?
At around 190 kbps, music works out near 1.4 MB per minute. Speech recordings usually come out smaller, because the variable bitrate spends fewer bits on silence and quiet passages.
