Opus is the codec behind the voice notes in WhatsApp and Telegram and the clips Discord records. It is remarkably efficient, which is exactly why messaging apps chose it and why so little else wants to play it: car stereos, older phones, video editors and many transcription services either refuse the .opus file or open it as silence. The moment you need to keep a voice note, hand it to a lawyer or add it to a video, the format is in your way.
This page converts the file to MP3 using FFmpeg inside your browser. Drop in the .opus, or the .ogg that some apps use as the container for the same audio, and download an MP3 encoded with high-quality VBR at around 190 kbps, which is far above anything a voice note contains, so the speech sounds identical. The file is not uploaded; a private voice message is converted on your own device.
The one real trade-off is size. Opus compresses speech extremely well, so the MP3 is usually several times larger than the original note, a megabyte or so for a one-minute message, which rarely matters. If you need the words rather than the sound, the Voice Memo to Text tool on this site transcribes .opus directly, and the base Audio Converter outputs WAV if an editor needs it.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I export a WhatsApp voice note as .opus?
- Long-press the voice message → Share (or Export chat with media) and save the file. WhatsApp hands you the .opus directly — drop it here unchanged.
- Will the MP3 lose quality?
- Voice notes are recorded at modest bitrates, and the MP3 encoding used here is far above that ceiling — the converted file sounds identical to the original note.
- Can I transcribe the voice note instead?
- Yes — our Voice Memo to Text tool accepts .opus directly and turns the note into readable text, also without uploading.
- My voice note has an .ogg extension, not .opus. Will it work?
- Yes. Opus audio is often stored inside an Ogg container, so .ogg and .opus files from messaging apps are the same audio with different labels, and both convert here to a normal MP3.
- Why is the MP3 bigger than the original voice note?
- Opus is far more efficient than MP3 at speech, and the MP3 here is encoded at a high bitrate to avoid any audible loss. Expect the file to grow several times over; a one-minute note becomes roughly a megabyte.
