Doubling is the enlargement people need most often. A 400 pixel logo pulled from an old email needs to be 800 for a website header. A 1000 pixel product photo has to meet a marketplace that asks for 2000. A 1024 by 768 picture from a camera of fifteen years ago has to fill a slide without looking like a postage stamp. In each case 2x is enough, and it is the gentler of the two factors this tool offers.

What happens is resampling in several passes, followed by sharpening so edges stay defined rather than smearing into a blur. It is not a generative model, which means it will not invent a texture or a face that was never in the picture, and that is a feature when the image is a logo, a chart or a screenshot where invented detail would be wrong. Clean graphics and reasonably sharp photos gain the most; a photo that is already soft comes out larger and still soft.

Doubling the width and the height quadruples the pixel count, so a 2000 pixel image becomes 4000. The output is capped at 8000 pixels on the longest side, which keeps a phone's browser from running out of memory. Everything is computed on your device and the image is not uploaded.
