A black-and-white QR code works, but it looks like a shipping label. On a menu, a poster, a business card or a table tent, a code in the brand's navy on a cream background, or a deep green on white, sits inside the design instead of interrupting it. This generator lets you set the colour of the dots and the colour of the background separately, encodes whatever text or link you type directly into the code, and gives you a PNG to place in your layout.
A few rules on colour. Scanners look for dark modules on a light field; keep the dots clearly darker than the background, and avoid the reverse. Saturated dark colours such as navy, charcoal, burgundy and forest green scan well. Pale or bright dots, yellow, light orange, pastel pink, often fail even when they look distinct to you, because the scanner sees brightness rather than hue. Leave a margin of plain background around the code, and remember that printed colours come out darker or lighter than on screen, so scan a printed proof before ordering a run. The code holds exactly the text you enter, so a Wi-Fi network string in the standard WIFI:T:WPA;S:name;P:password;; format works too, letting guests join a network from a card on the wall.

- Will a colored QR code still scan?
- Yes, as long as the code is noticeably darker than its background. Keep strong contrast and avoid inverting (light code on dark) for the most reliable scans.
- What can I encode besides a link?
- Plain text, a phone number, an email or any URL. Whatever you enter is embedded directly in the code.
- Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code with this?
- Yes. Enter the text WIFI:T:WPA;S:YourNetwork;P:YourPassword;; with your own network name and password, and phones will offer to join when scanned. If either contains a semicolon, comma, colon or backslash, put a backslash before it.
- Which colours should I avoid for the dots?
- Yellow, light orange, pastels and any bright or pale shade. Scanners read brightness, not hue, so a colour that looks distinct to you may read as background. Dark saturated colours and black are reliable.
