bitrate calculated from your target — compressed on your device, never uploaded
WhatsApp sends a video as a media message only if it is under 16 MB; above that, the app either forces its own heavy compression or makes you send it as a document. Sixteen megabytes is roughly 90 seconds of phone footage, so a two-minute clip of a school play sails past it. This page is set to a 16 MB target.
The tool reads the duration of your video, calculates the bitrate that lands under 16 MB after budgeting for audio and container overhead, and encodes to that number; if the first pass comes out over, it measures the miss and re-encodes once. For a longer clip it also lowers the resolution, because a smaller frame that plays smoothly beats a 1080p frame starved of bits. The encoding runs on your device, so a family video is never uploaded to a converter's server.
The trade-off is quality against length. Two to three minutes fit in 16 MB at a quality that is fine on a phone screen; ten minutes will look rough and blocky. If the clip is long, trim to the part that matters first with the Video Trimmer on this site, then compress. Expect WhatsApp to re-compress the file on sending; a file already under the cap suffers far less from that second pass than an oversized one would.

Frequently asked questions
- Why not just send it as a document?
- Documents skip the 16MB media cap (up to 2GB), but the recipient loses inline playback on many devices and the full-size file eats their storage. A 16MB media message plays instantly for everyone.
- How much video fits in 16MB with decent quality?
- About 2-3 minutes at watchable quality, or ~90 seconds looking genuinely good. Longer than that, consider trimming the highlight instead — our Video Trimmer does it losslessly.
- Does WhatsApp compress the video again after I send it?
- Usually, yes; the app re-encodes media on sending unless you pick the HD option. Starting from a file already under 16 MB keeps that second pass mild, whereas a large original is crushed hard.
- Will the result play on the recipient's phone?
- Yes. The output is a standard MP4 that WhatsApp treats as an ordinary video message, with inline preview and playback on Android and iPhone, rather than a document attachment that has to be downloaded and opened separately.
Guides
- How to compress a video for Discord (under 20 MB) without a watermark Discord's free upload limit is 20 MB since August 2026. Here is what that limit actually allows, how to get a clip under it without turning it into mush, and why you do not need an app or a server to do it.
- How to make a video file smaller without ruining it Four things decide how big a video is: length, resolution, bitrate and codec. Which one to change for email, WhatsApp, a website or a USB stick, the arithmetic behind "fit under 25 MB", and why trimming first is free.
