bitrate calculated from your target — compressed on your device, never uploaded

Since 14 August 2026 Discord lets accounts without Nitro upload files up to 20 MB, twice the 10 MB cap of the previous two years. That is enough for about a minute of good 1080p or two minutes of clean 720p, but a phone clip straight from the camera still blows through it: a minute of 1080p recording is often 15 to 20 MB on its own, and 4K or high-frame-rate footage is far heavier. This page is set to 20 MB and works backwards from that number instead of guessing.

It reads the duration of your clip, works out the video bitrate that fits once audio and the container are budgeted, and encodes to it, aiming slightly under the limit so the file passes Discord's check, which counts megabytes of 1,048,576 bytes. If the first pass lands over, it measures by how much and re-encodes once with a corrected rate. When the budget gets thin for a long clip it lowers the resolution, because 720p that plays cleanly looks better in a chat than 1080p broken into blocks. The output is an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, which Discord plays inline.

Everything runs in your browser with FFmpeg: the clip is never uploaded, there is no queue and no watermark. The honest limits: your own device does the encoding, so a long 1080p clip takes a few minutes, and past roughly five minutes no bitrate inside 20 MB looks good. Trim to the moment that matters first; it is free and lossless.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discord's upload limit now?
20 MB on a free account since August 2026; Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and Nitro 500 MB. Discord has changed the free limit several times (8, 25, 10 and now 20 MB), so the error banner in the app is the final word.
How long a video fits in 20 MB?
About a minute at good 1080p, two minutes at clean 720p, and around five minutes at acceptable 480p. Calm footage like a talking head fits more easily than fast gameplay or sports, which need more bits for the same quality.
Why aim for 19 MB and not exactly 20?
Containers add a little overhead and Discord counts a megabyte as 1,048,576 bytes, so a file reported as 20 MB elsewhere can be rejected. Landing slightly under the line is what makes the first try pass.
My clip is already under 20 MB. What happens?
It is returned untouched and marked as such. Re-encoding a file that already fits would only cost quality for nothing.
