A plain white background is the most common demand made of a photo. Most identity documents want it, from passports and visas to driving licences and work badges. Amazon requires pure white behind the main image of every product. Staff directories, LinkedIn headshots, CVs and school yearbooks look tidier with it. Wispy hair against a busy pattern, a glass bottle, smoke or a white shirt against a white wall can leave a rough or missing edge, and a product that casts a natural shadow loses that shadow along with the floor. Shoot against a plain, contrasting wall in even light and the white result needs no retouching.
