Instagram shows a square post at 1080 by 1080 pixels, and that is the exact size this page is set to. Upload something larger and the app downsizes it with its own compression; upload something smaller and it is stretched up and looks soft. Delivering a 1080-pixel square yourself means the photo is displayed with the least interference, which is why photographers and brands export at that number rather than letting the app decide.

There is a catch specific to this preset. It is set to force the exact 1080 by 1080 dimensions, with the keep-proportions option off, because the square post is what this page is for (the profile grid itself now shows 3:4 tiles, trimming a little from the sides of a square). If your photo is not already square, forcing it into one will squash or stretch it, and nobody looks good 20 per cent wider. The right order is to crop first to a 1:1 shape, using the Crop Image tool on this site, then resize the square here so the final file is exactly 1080 pixels on each side.

The resize is done on your device and the image is not uploaded. One more honest point: resizing sets the pixels, not the file size. Instagram re-compresses everything on upload anyway, so there is little point in compressing yourself; what you can control is giving it a sharp, correctly proportioned 1080-pixel square to start from.
