The best-known reason to need an exact 600 by 600 pixel image is the US visa photo. The State Department's online tool accepts a square JPG between 600 by 600 and 1200 by 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB, and the same digital photo rules apply to the Diversity Visa lottery. Outside immigration, 600 by 600 is a common thumbnail and avatar size for shops, directories and membership sites.

This page forces the output to 600 by 600 whatever the shape of the source. That is deliberate, because a square requirement is a pass-or-fail check, but it means a portrait or landscape photo will be squashed into the square rather than cropped. Crop to 1:1 first with the Crop Image tool, which takes the centre of the picture, and the resize here will then only change scale, not proportions.

A source photo should be at least 600 pixels on its shorter side. Enlarging a smaller one to meet the number produces a soft image, and visa reviewers reject blurry photos; for the DV or a visa application, retake the picture at the camera's full resolution rather than upscaling. Pixel size is only part of the specification: head size, plain light background and recent date are checked too. The resize is done in your browser, so the photo stays on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Is 600x600 the US visa photo size?
The US online visa and Diversity Visa photo must be square and at least 600×600 pixels (up to 1200×1200). 600×600 meets the minimum exactly.
My photo isn't square — what happens?
Forcing 600×600 stretches a non-square image. Crop it to a square first for an undistorted result.
The visa site also limits the file to 240 KB. How do I meet that?
Resize to 600×600 first, then run the result through the Compress Image tool with a target of 240 or a little lower. At 600×600 pixels a portrait fits comfortably within 240 KB at high quality.
Can I enlarge a smaller photo to 600×600?
The tool will do it, but it cannot add detail, so a 300-pixel photo becomes a soft 600-pixel one. For a visa, which rejects blurry images, take a new photo at full resolution instead.
