AVIF is the newest of the web image formats, and it is good at its job: a photo saved as AVIF is often half the size of the same picture as JPG. The trouble starts when the file leaves the browser. Image editors, document tools, printing services and most upload forms still do not recognise AVIF, and a right-click save from a modern site increasingly hands you one. Converting it to PNG gives you a file nearly every program can open, with transparency preserved if the AVIF had any, which matters for logos and cut-outs.

One prerequisite: the decoding is done by your browser, so it has to be able to display AVIF in the first place. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can; an old browser will fail to load the file, and updating is the fix. Once decoded, the image is written out pixel for pixel as PNG. Because PNG is lossless, the result is considerably larger than the source, and any softness the AVIF encoder introduced stays in the PNG; conversion stops further loss, it does not reverse earlier loss.

Pick PNG when transparency or editing is the goal. For a flat photo that only needs to be accepted somewhere, JPG from the same converter gives a much smaller file. The conversion is done on your device and the file is not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does this keep AVIF transparency?
Yes — PNG supports transparency, so any transparent areas in the AVIF are preserved in the PNG.
PNG or JPG for my AVIF?
Pick PNG for graphics, logos or transparency; pick JPG for photos where a smaller file matters more.
Why won't my AVIF file load?
The decoding relies on your browser. Older browsers cannot display AVIF at all, so the file never opens. Update to a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and try again.
Will the PNG be larger than the AVIF?
Yes, usually by a large margin. AVIF compresses very efficiently and PNG stores pixels losslessly, so a small AVIF can become a PNG many times its size. That is normal and does not mean quality was added.
