Most WebP files on your computer got there by accident: you right-clicked an image on a website and saved it, and the site served WebP because that is what modern browsers prefer. The trouble starts when you try to use it. Older versions of Photoshop and Office, many print-shop ordering systems, some marketplace listing forms, older photo viewers on Windows and a lot of in-house software either refuse the file or show a blank thumbnail. Converting to JPG takes the image back to the format that every program understands.
The conversion is done by your browser's own image engine and the result is a standard JPG that you can attach, upload or print. Three things are worth knowing before you convert. JPG cannot store transparency, so if the WebP had a transparent background, say a logo or a sticker, those areas come out white; choose PNG on the Convert Image page instead when the background must stay clear. JPG also has no notion of animation, so an animated WebP becomes a single still frame. And because JPG is lossy, the file is re-encoded on the way out; for a photo the difference is invisible, but it is one more reason to keep the original if you might need to convert again later.

Frequently asked questions
- Why won't my WebP open in some programs?
- WebP is newer, so older software and some default photo viewers don't support it. JPG is universally compatible.
- Can I convert many WebP files?
- This page converts one at a time. For batches, our Bulk tools can help.
- Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?
- Usually yes, often by a quarter to a third for the same visual quality, because WebP compresses more efficiently. If the JPG must meet a size limit, run it through the Compress Image tool afterwards.
- What happens to an animated WebP?
- JPG cannot hold animation, so only a single still frame is kept. If you need the motion preserved, keep the file as WebP or convert it to a GIF with a dedicated tool instead.
