Some destinations will not take anything but PNG: app store listings and icon uploads, print-on-demand sites that need a transparent logo, document editors that only accept PNG for an inline signature, bug trackers that render screenshots inline, and plenty of web forms that simply list .png as the only option. This page is set to PNG output, so a JPG or WebP you drop in comes back as a .png file ready for those uploads.
PNG is lossless, which means every pixel is stored exactly, and it supports a transparent background. Those two properties explain both its strengths and its main cost. Screenshots, diagrams, text-heavy graphics and logos stay perfectly crisp, with none of the fuzzy halos JPG puts around sharp edges. Photographs, on the other hand, become large: a photo that was 300 KB as a JPG can easily be 2 or 3 MB as a PNG, because there is no way to throw away detail. One expectation to correct before you start: converting does not create transparency. A JPG logo on a white background becomes a PNG logo on a white background. If you need the backdrop removed, run the image through the Remove Background tool on this site first; the cut-out it produces keeps the transparency. The conversion happens in your browser and the image is never sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions
- When should I convert to PNG?
- When you need transparency, perfectly sharp text and lines, or a lossless copy for editing. For photos where size matters, JPG is usually better.
- Will converting to PNG improve quality?
- It preserves the current quality losslessly but can't restore detail already lost to earlier compression. It stops further loss going forward.
- Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG I started with?
- Because PNG stores every pixel exactly and cannot discard detail. For photographs this means files several times larger. If size matters more than lossless edges, keep the JPG or use WebP instead.
- Does converting a JPG to PNG make the background transparent?
- No. The white or coloured background in the JPG is kept as it is. PNG can hold transparency, but something has to remove the background first; the Remove Background tool on this site does that.
