Converting a JPG to PNG is less about the picture than about what happens to it next. PNG is lossless, so a file you will open, edit and save a dozen times in an editor stops degrading with each save. Some upload fields insist on PNG: logo slots in web builders, app store listings, print-on-demand stores, certain government forms.
Be clear about what the conversion does not do. The detail a JPG threw away when it was first saved is gone, and wrapping the same pixels in a PNG container does not bring it back; compression artifacts around text and edges are preserved exactly as they are. Nor does the PNG gain a transparent background on its own. It stays an opaque picture until a tool such as the Remove Background page cuts the subject out.
Expect a bigger file. A photo has almost no repeated areas for lossless compression to exploit, so the PNG is often three to ten times the size of the JPG. That is fine for editing and for a form that demands PNG, and a poor choice for a web page. The conversion is done by your browser, with nothing sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions
- Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
- No — it preserves the current quality losslessly but can't recover detail already lost to JPG compression. It just prevents further loss.
- Why would I want PNG?
- PNG supports transparency and is lossless, which some design tools, logos and editing workflows require.
- Why is the PNG so much bigger than my JPG?
- PNG compresses without discarding anything, and a photo has few identical pixels to shrink, so three to ten times the size is normal. Use the PNG for editing or where it is required; keep the JPG for sharing.
- Will converting to PNG make the background transparent?
- No. The format can hold transparency, but conversion only repackages the existing pixels. To cut the background out, use the Remove Background tool, which already delivers its result as a transparent PNG.
