Transcribe Finnish Audio to Text — Free, No Upload
Convert Finnish audio or video into text in your browser. 100% free, no per-minute limit, no account — nothing is uploaded. Opens with the most accurate model.
What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
- • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
- • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
- • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
- • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

transcribed on your device by OpenAI's Whisper — your recording is not uploaded
ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.
Finnish punishes careless transcription. Every noun carries a case ending, verbs pick up person and tense suffixes, and a single wrong vowel turns one word into another, so a transcript with sloppy endings is slower to fix than to retype. That is why this page opens with the Best model already chosen rather than a smaller one. Best is a larger one-time download and runs slower, and in Finnish that cost buys a transcript that needs proofreading rather than rebuilding.
The language is also preset to Finnish, so a lecture, a council meeting, a radio interview or a dictated memo is not misread as Estonian or Swedish, and ä, ö and the double consonants and vowels come out written correctly. OpenAI's Whisper does the work inside your browser in Private mode: the engine and model are downloaded the first time and cached when possible, and the recording is never uploaded. Copy the result or download a TXT; subtitle exports with timestamps are available for video.
Finnish is not among the languages the model has heard most, so recording quality carries extra weight. One speaker at a time, close to the microphone, in a quiet room gives good text; fast puhekieli with slang and overlapping voices needs more correction. If your device struggles with Best, Accurate is the next step down and still reasonable for clear speech.

Frequently asked questions
- Why Best by default?
- Because Finnish endings carry meaning, and the smaller models get too many of them wrong. Best is slower but accurate enough to edit rather than retype.
- Are ä and ö written correctly?
- Yes. The output is standard written Finnish with punctuation.
- Does it handle spoken (puhekieli) Finnish?
- It transcribes what is said, so colloquial forms appear as spoken. Very fast informal speech loses accuracy, as in every language.
- Can I switch to a faster model instead of Best?
- Yes. Fast and Accurate are both available on the page. They download sooner and run quicker, at the cost of more wrong word endings in Finnish, so they suit a rough draft or a device with limited memory.
- Can I get timestamps with the Finnish transcript?
- Choose a subtitle export instead of plain text. The subtitle formats carry timestamps for each segment, which also makes it easier to find a passage in a long lecture or meeting recording.
Guides
- How transcription in your browser works, and why nothing is uploaded A plain explanation of how a web page can turn speech into text without sending your recording anywhere: the Whisper model, the one-time download, what the Fast, Accurate and Best settings change, and what to expect on a phone.
- SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file to use, and how to add it to your video The two subtitle formats that matter, what is actually inside them, where each one works (YouTube, VLC, Premiere, CapCut, web players), the difference between a subtitle file and burned-in captions, and how to generate and fix one.

🔒 Private mode (the default): your recording never leaves your device. Instant mode is optional, you switch it on yourself, and it sends the audio to the browser's speech service.
