Transcribe Tamil Audio to Text — Free, No Upload
Convert Tamil audio or video into Tamil-script text in your browser. 100% free, no per-minute limit, no signup — nothing is uploaded. Opens with the most accurate model.
What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
- • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
- • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
- • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
- • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

transcribed on your device by OpenAI's Whisper — your recording is not uploaded
ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.
Tamil audio comes out in Tamil script (தமிழ்), not in English letters, and that is the first thing to check in any Tamil transcriber. We tested this one with real recorded Tamil speech: the language was identified correctly, and with the Best model the text came out close to the original, word for word in most places.
Two honest notes from that test. The smaller models misspell too many Tamil words, so this page opens with Best already selected: a bigger one-time download, and the right output. And Tamil is really two registers: formal Tamil from news, lectures and speeches transcribes well, while everyday spoken Tamil and Tanglish, with English mixed in, lose accuracy, because the model writes what it expects written Tamil to look like. Sri Lankan, Malaysian and Singapore Tamil work too. Everything runs in your browser: free, with no minute limit, and the recording never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it write Tamil script or Tanglish?
- Tamil script. English words spoken in the middle of Tamil are usually written in Tamil letters as well. If you need romanised text you can convert the result afterwards.
- Why does this page open with the Best model?
- Because in our test with real Tamil speech the smaller models misspelled too many words. Best is slower and a larger one-time download, but the transcript can be edited rather than retyped.
- What about Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and other Indian languages?
- We tested Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Nepali with real speech, and the models that run inside a browser were not accurate enough. We would rather not offer them than hand you wrong text. Hindi and Tamil passed and have their own pages.
- Will it work on my phone?
- Short clips, yes. The Best model is a large download and phones have less memory, so long recordings are better handled on a computer. In Chrome on Android the page also offers Instant mode, which needs no download but sends the audio to Google’s speech service.
Guides
- How transcription in your browser works, and why nothing is uploaded A plain explanation of how a web page can turn speech into text without sending your recording anywhere: the Whisper model, the one-time download, what the Fast, Accurate and Best settings change, and what to expect on a phone.
- SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file to use, and how to add it to your video The two subtitle formats that matter, what is actually inside them, where each one works (YouTube, VLC, Premiere, CapCut, web players), the difference between a subtitle file and burned-in captions, and how to generate and fix one.

🔒 Private mode (the default): your recording never leaves your device. Instant mode is optional, you switch it on yourself, and it sends the audio to the browser's speech service.
