What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
- • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
- • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
- • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
- • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

transcribed on your device by OpenAI's Whisper — your recording is not uploaded
ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.
Most Italian audio that needs transcribing falls into a few groups: university lectures and seminar recordings, interviews and podcasts, voice messages from relatives, meetings with a notary or an agency, and the listening material of people learning the language. Automatic detection on a short or noisy clip sometimes mistakes Italian for Spanish or Portuguese and the text comes out garbled; this page opens with Italian already selected, so the model is told what it is hearing from the first second.
The output is standard written Italian with accents, apostrophes and punctuation, so perché, l'ho and un'altra come out as they are written. Formal speech from a lecture or a news segment transcribes best. Expect more corrections on fast conversational Italian with several people interrupting each other, as in a talk show or a family dinner, and on recordings made far from the microphone. For learners, the transcript doubles as a check on what was actually said; for video, the subtitle export produces timed captions in Italian. Translation into English is available as a separate option if you need the meaning rather than the original words. The recognition runs in your browser in the default Private mode, with no upload and no per-minute charge; the first use downloads the model, and a long recording takes a while to process.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it transcribe dialects?
- Standard Italian with regional accents works well. True dialects such as Neapolitan or Sicilian are effectively separate languages and results are unreliable.
- How long can the recording be?
- There is no limit. An hour of audio takes roughly 10 to 30 minutes on a typical laptop, depending on the model you choose.
- Does anything get uploaded?
- No. The model runs in your browser — you can disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and it still works.
- Can I get Italian subtitles for a video?
- Yes. Besides plain text, the transcript can be exported in subtitle formats with timings, so you can attach it to a video as Italian captions or load it into an editor for adjustment.
- Does it handle Italian spoken with a foreign accent?
- Usually, as long as the words are clear. A learner's or an expatriate's accent costs a few more errors than a native speaker, mostly on vowel-dependent words. Keep the language fixed to Italian rather than relying on detection.
Guides
- How transcription in your browser works, and why nothing is uploaded A plain explanation of how a web page can turn speech into text without sending your recording anywhere: the Whisper model, the one-time download, what the Fast, Accurate and Best settings change, and what to expect on a phone.
- SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file to use, and how to add it to your video The two subtitle formats that matter, what is actually inside them, where each one works (YouTube, VLC, Premiere, CapCut, web players), the difference between a subtitle file and burned-in captions, and how to generate and fix one.

🔒 Private mode (the default): your recording never leaves your device. Instant mode is optional, you switch it on yourself, and it sends the audio to the browser's speech service.
