What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
- • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
- • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
- • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
- • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.
Norwegian is a smaller language for speech models than English or Spanish, and that shows up in a practical way: the lighter models make noticeably more spelling and word errors on it, while the largest one is close to usable without heavy editing. For that reason this page preselects the Best model instead of the default, and it fixes the language to Norwegian so that detection does not drift. The cost is time and memory: the Best model is the slowest, and on a phone it may be too heavy, in which case drop to Accurate.
Typical material is meeting recordings for minutes, lectures and seminar sessions, research interviews, podcast episodes and language-learning practice. The transcript comes out in Bokmål with æ, ø and å in place and ordinary punctuation, so it can be pasted into a document as a working draft. English words, which are common in Norwegian workplace speech, are usually kept as English. Review names, place names and figures, which are the usual trouble spots; and if your speakers are from the west or the north, expect to correct more words than for Oslo speech, since dialect remains the main source of errors. There is no per-minute limit (files up to 8 GB), and in the default Private mode the audio is handled in your browser without being uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
- Bokmål or Nynorsk?
- The output is Bokmål. Nynorsk speakers get Bokmål text that they can adapt; the model does not write Nynorsk.
- How well does it handle dialects?
- Eastern Norwegian best, then Bergen and Trøndelag; strong northern and western dialects lose more words. Use the Best model, which this page already selects.
- Does it confuse Norwegian with Danish or Swedish?
- Automatic detection sometimes can. This page fixes the language to Norwegian, so it does not apply here.
- Why is the Best model preselected on this page?
- Because the smaller models make many more errors on Norwegian than on major languages. In testing, Best produced clean Bokmål where the medium model left misspellings. If your device struggles, switch to Accurate and expect a few more corrections.
- Are English words in Norwegian speech transcribed correctly?
- Mostly. Workplace Norwegian is full of English terms, and the model generally writes them in English spelling. Occasionally it will Norwegianise one or guess a similar-sounding Norwegian word, so scan the transcript for those.
Guides
- How transcription in your browser works, and why nothing is uploaded A plain explanation of how a web page can turn speech into text without sending your recording anywhere: the Whisper model, the one-time download, what the Fast, Accurate and Best settings change, and what to expect on a phone.
- SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file to use, and how to add it to your video The two subtitle formats that matter, what is actually inside them, where each one works (YouTube, VLC, Premiere, CapCut, web players), the difference between a subtitle file and burned-in captions, and how to generate and fix one.
