⬇️ One-time download: 104 MB (Accurate model 73 MB + 31 MB audio engine, shared with the video tools) — only the first time: it stays saved in your browser, so next time it starts right away. (Translating or switching model needs its own file; a browser can clear this cache if storage runs very low.) Processing takes about 4-8 min per 10 minutes of audio on a typical laptop.
What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
  • • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
  • • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
  • • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
  • • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
  • • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

transcribed on your device by OpenAI's Whisper — your recording is not uploaded

ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.

The test of a Japanese transcript is whether it looks like something a person wrote. Spoken Japanese has to come back as the right mix of kanji, hiragana and katakana, with kanji chosen by meaning, loanwords in katakana, and sentences closed with the 。 full stop. A transcript that gets this right can go straight into 議事録 or a subtitle file; one that does not is barely worth correcting.

This page opens with Japanese already chosen and runs the Whisper model inside your browser, so the recording of a meeting, a seminar, an interview or a lecture is processed on your own machine and a confidential discussion is never sent to a server. There is no charge per minute. The model is fetched once and reused after that when the browser still has it. Plain text is the default output, with SRT and VTT exports when you need timestamps.

Where the output needs checking: homophones, where 機会 and 機械 sound identical and the model picks from context; personal and place names, which get the most common kanji rather than the right one; and fast, overlapping conversation, which loses accuracy. Clear, single-speaker audio is what it does best; a Kansai or Tohoku speaker is transcribed, but with more errors than standard speech. Try a short clip first before committing a two-hour file.

Frequently asked questions

Does the output use kanji?
Yes — the model writes natural Japanese mixing kanji, hiragana and katakana, not kana-only text.
How does it handle Kansai-ben and other dialects?
It transcribes them, usually into standard-looking Japanese, with some loss of dialect nuance and lower accuracy than standard speech.
Can I get subtitles for a video?
Yes — export .SRT or .VTT with timestamps, ready for any editor or video platform.
Will personal and place names come out with the right kanji?
Not reliably. The model hears the reading and picks the most common kanji for it, so 佐藤 and 佐東 can be swapped. Check every name against your attendee list or the speaker's business card.
Does the transcript include Japanese punctuation?
Usually yes: sentences end with 。 and pauses get 、, which keeps the text readable without spaces. Still skim for run-on sentences in fast speech, where the model sometimes drops a stop.

🔒 Private mode (the default): your recording never leaves your device. Instant mode is optional, you switch it on yourself, and it sends the audio to the browser's speech service.
