Transcribe German Audio to Text — Free, No Upload, Private
Turn German audio or video into text entirely in your browser. 100% free, no per-minute limit, no account — the file never leaves your computer.
What exactly is downloaded — and is it safe?
- • The speech model is OpenAI's Whisper, open source, converted to run in browsers. The audio engine is FFmpeg, the open-source tool behind most video software.
- • They come from Hugging Face and unpkg — public repositories used by researchers and developers worldwide, not from us.
- • They are not programs. Nothing is installed, no permission is asked, and your browser keeps them in its own cache exactly like it keeps a website's images.
- • They can't read your files or touch anything outside this page. Remove them any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
- • Your audio never goes the other way: this site has no server receiving files.

transcribed on your device by OpenAI's Whisper — your recording is not uploaded
ℹ️ Use a recording on your device that you own or have permission to process. This tool cannot fetch YouTube or social video links. Start with a short clip. Larger models can improve accuracy but require more memory and download data. Processing time varies by device, model and recording length. Always review the result.
German is a language that punishes careless transcription. Compound nouns have to come out as one word, Rechtsschutzversicherung and not three fragments; umlauts and the ß must be written rather than approximated; nouns need their capitals; and the verb at the end of a long clause has to land in the right place. Whisper handles all of this well enough that the output reads as written German, which is what makes it editable instead of disposable.
This page opens with German selected, so the model never has to guess the language from the first seconds, which can go wrong with a Swiss or Austrian speaker. The recording, whether a Vorlesung, a meeting or an interview, is processed entirely on your own device: the model is downloaded to the browser the first time, and after that nothing leaves your computer, which keeps the DSGVO question simple, since no third party processes the audio.
What still needs a human: names of people and firms, figures and dates, and English terms dropped into German sentences, which can be written as they sound. Strong dialect lowers accuracy, and a quiet speaker far from the microphone lowers it more than any accent does. Pick the Fast model for a quick draft, Accurate or Best for a recording you will rely on, and expect a long lecture to take a while on a phone.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it handle Swiss German or Austrian accents?
- Austrian and standard Swiss High German work well. Swiss dialect (Schwyzerdütsch) is much harder and accuracy drops noticeably — that is honest, not a setting you can fix.
- Are umlauts and ß written correctly?
- Yes, along with capitalised nouns and punctuation, so the output reads as proper written German.
- Is this acceptable under GDPR?
- The recording never leaves your device, so no data is transferred to us or anyone else — which is the part most data-protection rules are concerned with. Your own organisation’s policy still applies.
- What happens with English words in a German recording?
- Common loanwords and tech terms are usually written correctly, but with the language fixed to German, longer English phrases may come out spelled as they sound. For a meeting held mostly in English, select English instead.
- Are numbers and dates written as digits?
- Mostly yes: amounts, years and times tend to appear as digits, and dates in the usual German form. They are also where errors cluster, so compare every figure in a contract or an invoice against the audio.
Guides
- How transcription in your browser works, and why nothing is uploaded A plain explanation of how a web page can turn speech into text without sending your recording anywhere: the Whisper model, the one-time download, what the Fast, Accurate and Best settings change, and what to expect on a phone.
- SRT vs VTT: which subtitle file to use, and how to add it to your video The two subtitle formats that matter, what is actually inside them, where each one works (YouTube, VLC, Premiere, CapCut, web players), the difference between a subtitle file and burned-in captions, and how to generate and fix one.
