Ireland runs one of the few passport services where a home photo is normal. Passport Online, used for renewals and many first-time applications, accepts a digital photo taken on a phone, so long as it meets the guidelines: a plain, light-coloured background, even lighting with no shadows, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and visible, and the head centred and filling most of the frame.

This page sizes your photo to the Irish 35 by 45 standard, removes the background with an AI model and replaces it with plain light grey (white is one click away), and gives you two files: the digital photo for the online service and a print sheet with several copies for a paper application or a photo kiosk. The work is done in your browser, so your face is not uploaded anywhere.

Two honest notes. The tool sets size and background, not pose: take the photo in daylight against a wall, keep hair out of the eyes, and have someone else hold the phone so the face is not distorted at arm's length. And the page opens on light grey, the colour the Passport Service's own examples mention alongside cream; read the current guidance on dfa.ie before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for Passport Online?
It creates a correctly-sized 35×45mm digital photo. Follow the Passport Online quality guidance for lighting and pose when you upload.
What background does Ireland want?
A plain light grey or cream background with no shadows or objects. With the automatic background on, the tool uses plain light grey.
Can I take the photo myself on my phone for Passport Online?
Yes, that is what the service expects, but have someone else take it from a short distance rather than a selfie, in daylight, against a plain wall. The tool handles the size and background afterwards.
What pixel size does Passport Online need?
The service sets minimum and maximum pixel dimensions and a file-size cap for the JPG upload; the figures are on dfa.ie. Use the digital file from this tool at its full size rather than a screenshot, and check it against those numbers.
