Japanese passport photos follow precise numbers published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: 35 by 45 millimetres, with the head, crown to chin, at 34 millimetres give or take 2, and a margin of about 4 millimetres above the head. The background must be plain, white or very light, with no pattern and no shadow, and the photo must have been taken within the last six months. Glasses are allowed if the eyes are clearly visible and the lenses are not tinted or reflecting.
