Most UK applicants never print a passport photo: renewals and many first applications are made online, with the photo uploaded as a digital file that HM Passport Office checks automatically. The printed standard is still 35 by 45 mm, and that is what a paper form or a Post Office check-and-send appointment needs. The head must be a specific size in the frame, with the top of the hair and the chin both visible and clear space above the head. Face the camera squarely with a neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open; glasses are allowed only without glare or tint. HM Passport Office asks for a plain, light-coloured background, gives cream and light grey as examples, and wants photos that have not been altered by computer software. This page can replace whatever is behind you with plain light grey, but the safest route is to stand against a plain cream or light grey wall and switch the automatic background off, so the tool only sizes the photo.
